When it comes to flexible fuel vehicles, these automobiles are powered by one of several different fuels. The most common fuels used to power a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV) are ethanol/gasoline blends, which can range from 85% ethanol to 71% ethanol.
In recent years, biodiesel has become an increasingly popular option for powering an FFV. Biodiesel is produced from renewable sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats, making it a sustainable alternative for powering your car. However, few vehicles on the market today come standard with this fuel option; if you have an older model car that's compatible with biodiesel, you may need to have it retrofitted in order for it to run on this fuel source.
Other potential options for fueling an FFV include propane and compressed natural gas (CNG). Both of these fuel sources are less common than gasoline and biodiesel, but they can still offer drivers significant cost savings over gasoline-only fueled cars. Propane is particularly attractive since it's easy to find at many gas stations throughout the country and offers drivers greater convenience than CNG or biodiesel.
Finally, many modern FFV models also offer electric hybrids or full electric options as another fueling source. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular as they offer many benefits including improved efficiency and lower emissions than traditional gasoline-powered cars. Tesla is a well-known leader in this space with their fully electric Model S sedan and Model X SUV models.
